This is the final project for my Sewfestive3 DIY sewing challenge. It’s a super easy sequinned pencil skirt which you can whip up in under an hour. I’ve used sequinned fabric but you could use any fabric with a stretch. This skirt is so much fun and looks so glam! Perfect for New Years Eve celebrations.
You will need:
- Approx 1 meter of stretch sequin fabric depending on the length of skirt.
- Approx 1 meter of stretch lining (if you think you need lining).
- Waist measurement plus 3cm of 2.5cm wide waist elastic.
Measure:
This will be a quater skirt pattern so we will need to do some calculations first.
The center back and center front will be placed on the fold of your fabric.
Measure your hips at the fullest part and divide that by 4 to get your hip measurement.
Measure from your waist to the length you would like your skirt and add 10cm to allow for the hem and waistband.
Draw up your pattern:
You will draw a rectangle with the your hip calculations across (your waist seam) and length down (your side seam).
On one side, measure in 2.5cm from waist and down 15cm. Re draw the line with a french curve and blend with the side seam.
Repeat from hem line 2.5cm in and 15 cm up to create the pencil seam line.
Cut out your pattern out.
Cut your fabric out:
Lay out your pattern with the center back/front on the fold. My fabric is not stretchy so I am cutting mine on the bias. To do that, I folded it diagonally and placed the center back/front on the fold. Cut out two. One front and back piece. If you decide to line your skirt, cut out your lining the same way except make your lining shorter. How much shorter is completely up to you. You may wish to have a mini lining so you can see through it up to your thighs or you may wish to line the entire skirt.
Sew it:
Sew with a stretch needle and small zig zag stitch. If you have an overcast stitch on you machine, use that.
Sew side seams of skirt using a 1.5cm seam allowance. Sew the lining side seams the same way.
Hem the lining by finishing the raw edge of the hem with a zigzag stitch or serge and turn up 2.5cm. Stitch in place by stitching close to the finished edge.
Insert your lining into your skirt, wrong side to wrong side. Pin together at waist and baste in place.
Measure your waist plus 3cm and cut your waistband elastic to this measurement. Sew the ends of the elastic together using a 1.5cm seam allowance. Fold your elastic in quaters and pop a pin in at each quater (these will mark your CB, CF and side seam points.) Pin elastic to waist band popping a pin in at the side seams, CB and CF.
Start sewing your elastic to the waistband close to the edge, stretching as you sew so that it fits to the next pin. Always make sure your needle is down when you stop sewing to make it easier to pull and stretch.
Turn the waistband to the inside and sew in place close to the raw edge.
Finish your hem at the raw edge with a zig zag stitch and fold up 2.5cm.
Stitch hem in place close to the raw edge.
Finito! A sparkly new skirt.
