The Sage Smock Dress is a pretty, loose fitting tiered midi smock dress with a tie back closure, in seam pockets , three sleeve variations and available in sizes 6 – 24 (Australian standards). 

This pretty dress pattern has three sleeve options. View A has a set in short sleeve which is gathered at the hem and finished with self binding. View B has a regular set in short sleeve and View C is sleeveless with a slightly lower armhole depth.

The Sage Smock Dress has two tiers and is midi length but it would be so easy to omit one tier and make a shorter flirty version. All views have bust darts, in seam pockets and a tie back closure. It is a loose fitting dress with plenty of ease and would look great made up in linen, cottons, rayon, or any soft drapey woven fabric. There is a lot of gathering so keep in mind that a softer fabric is easier to gather.

The Sage Smock dress is a floaty, boho style dress that would look great teamed up with a pair of pretty sandals, flip flops or even some cool sneakers for a great weekend casual vibe. The sleeveless style has a slightly lower armhole depth making it light and breezy,  perfect to  pop over your bathers for a trip to the beach.

Based on a fabric width of 150cm / 54”

SIZE 6-14 16-24
VIEW A (Set in sleeve with gathers) 3.5m / 3 3/4y 3.75m / 4y
VIEW B (Set in sleeve) 3.5m/ 3 3/4y 3.75m / 4y
VIEW C (Sleeveless) 3.2m / 3y 3.5m/ 3 3/4y

Note : This pattern is designed for a fabric width of 150cm / 54”

If your fabric is less than 150cm wide,  the Lower Tier will need to be cut into 3 equal pieces. The total width of all 3 pieces should equal the total width of the original lower tier.  Sew three seams rather than two and place one seam at the center back and the remaining seams towards the front at notches distributing gathers equally.

You will need approximately 1 extra meter of fabric than the above requirements.

    Easy pattern to follow, well illustrated. I helped my two daughters (aged 13 and 11) make a dress each, one with sleeves and one without, with great results for both.

    Sage, view C Sleeveless tiered, First garment my granddaughter has made with a little assistance. Overall we were very satisfied with pattern and instructions. However didn’t rate 5 stars as finished neckline too high cut in front and rides high after an hour or so. . We will need to make alterations after Christmas.

    Enjoyed making this dress! Also don’t stress if you can’t make it out of a 55″ or wider fabric. The bottom tier is easy to make from 45″ fabric if you make 4 sections instead of 2. A fun and super straight forward sewing project. Especially loved the tie neck detail.

    Love this pattern – so glad I bought it. I’ve made 2 dresses with the sleeves from thin, drapey cotton (one was a recycled duvet cover because I loved the way the pattern had an almost ombre effect down the tiers) and they’re so effortlessly comfortable to wear. Also a sleeveless version in light linen which I’m looking forward to wearing when it warms up a bit here.
