Smock dresses are having a serious fashion moment—and this sweet bow-front version is no exception! Inspired by a gorgeous black dress I spotted recently, I wanted to reimagine our Sage Smock Dress with a few clever tweaks to achieve the same soft, feminine feel. And the best part? It’s easier than you think!
The Inspiration
I came across a cute little tiered smock dress with a centre-front slit and tie-up bows and instantly thought, “Wait a second… This looks like a Sage Smock Dress, just with a twist!”

ASOS
With a few simple adjustments to your Sage Dress sewing pattern and some easy bow-making, you can recreate this look easily. Add as many bows as you like or place them wherever you prefer—the tutorial will guide you step by step.
This version moves the tie opening from the back to the front and adds two extra matching bows down the front for that sweet, romantic finish. In our tutorial, you’ll learn how to:
Adjust the front and back bodice pieces for the new opening
Create and attach the tie bows to the front
Lengthen the top tier if you’d like a single-tiered version
It’s the same Sage base pattern you know and love—just with a fresh, playful update.
What Fabrics Work?
This style is perfect in light-to-mid weight fabrics like linen, cotton lawn, chambray, or seersucker. Crisp cottons will give the bows structure, while rayon or viscose will give a soft, flowing drape. You can go classic with gingham or solids, or make a statement with a bold print—just remember to cut the ties on the bias for that lovely fold and finish.
