Venus Kimono Oversize – a plus size pattern option

Plus size oversize pattern venus kimono

The Venus Kimono – Oversize pattern has been designed to fall generously over the body to create a relaxed bohemian look.  I have been asked a lot recently by sewers if the oversize version would also be a suitable plus size pattern. Yes! It is the perfect pattern for plus size sewers and is ideal for the size 18 -24 size range (Australian sizes).

I was also asked if I could use a plus size model on my pattern to give an idea of what the kimono would look like made up. What a great idea! So with that in mind I asked my  friends if anyone would be interested in helping me out with a photo shoot. To my delight my friend Sandy put up her hand up. Both of the kimono’s pictured looked fabulous on her and were the perfect fit.  I will be adding these photos to the pattern along with some of the original ones to show how diverse this pattern can be.

In case your wondering if the Venus Kimono – Oversize or plus size pattern fit is the right pattern for your size, I have a few finished measurements for you as a guide.

Finished measurements of the Oversize Kimono are:

Centre back length 85cm.
Sleeve length from neck 52cm
Total circumference at the bustline is 160cm.
The relaxed size pattern is the same length and sleeve length but the total circumference at the bust line is 140cm.

The first Venus Kimono pictured on Sandy is made from a silk georgette and the camo print kimono is made up in a rayon. Both of the fabrics drape beautifully are are a great choice. The rayon is a great for a casual look and is easier to work with plus easy to care for. Silks are more difficult to sew and you will need to take care with cleaning it but it is a beautiful choice for a special occasion.

In the next few weeks I will be adding a Sewalong for the Venus Kimono so stay tuned…

Thankyou Sandy for being such a fun model to work with!

      Hi Heidi
Yes, all the instructions are very easy to follow with photos for each step.

The pattern also includes fabric layouts.

This is a great project for a beginner who has sewn a few things before. I’ve had a few beginners in my classes who have all sewn this kimono successfully and also very quickly!

      Happy Sewing!
