Pattern Making Techniques – to replicate a pattern from one of your favourite garments.

Tuesday Jan 11th – Feb 1st, 6-9pm.  12 hours (4 consecutive weeks)

Learn the techniques required to create a pattern from a favourite garment without having to unpick it!  Bring along a simple garment that you love and learn how to create a pattern, sew a test sample and understand the construction. You can then take the pattern home and sew it up or if you need extra help, bring it to one of our Freestyle classes.

No prior knowledge of patternmaking is required but you will need some sewing experience.

Vaccination certificate will be required for any adult entering the premises. You can add your digital certificate to the Service Victoria app so that when you check in to the studio it will give you a green tick. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can provide a printed certificate. If you have a medical exemption you will need to provide a medical certificate from an approved practitioner.

 

Description

What you will learn:

  • Which pattern making tools to use.
  • Understanding of grainline
  • Pattern drafting techniques
  • How to mark seams and details
  • How to transfer darts or gathers
  • How to add facings if required
  • Adding seam allowance
  • Construction of the toile
  • Asses fit
  • Finalise pattern

You will finish at least one  pattern and the toile (test garment) but expect to do a little homework between classes.

Please make sure you bring something simple to start with like a boxy top, an a-line skirt or pants without a fly. Make sure your garment doesn’t have too many details or seams.

What to bring:

  • 2  simple woven fabric garments (please do not bring stretch or silky garments)
  • 3 metres of light to medium weight cotton calico or an inexpensive fabric which is similar to your garment to make your toile.
  • A roll of plain white craft paper. You can purchase this from spotlight or office works. You can also purchase larger pattern making paper but this can be expensive.
  • Any tools you already have, pencils, rulers, curved rulers. (we have these supplies if you don’t have them but it’s best to bring your own so you don’t have to share.)

Supplied:

  • Paper and Fabric Scissors
  • Measuring tapes and a selection of rulers.
  • Sticky tape.
  • Sewing Machines and overlockers
  • Coffee, Tea, Biscuits
