Join our exciting 3-week beginner’s course, designed to elevate your sewing skills and boost your confidence. Using the fabulous Tilly and The Buttons Lotta dress pattern, we’ll guide you through each stage, ensuring you gain the expertise needed to craft your very own easy-to-sew, easy-to-wear dress.

As you work on your project, you’ll acquire valuable sewing skills and knowledge. Using the Lotta sewing pattern, you’ll fashion a pretty, versatile, and wearable dress that you’ll be proud to call your own. The Lotta dress offers flexibility with on-the-knee or midi-length skirts, short or bracelet-length sleeves, and the option for stylish large turnover patch pockets. It’s a wardrobe essential you’ll want to make and wear again and again.

Studio Access: The studio opens its doors 10 minutes before the class, offering you ample time to settle in comfortably.

Our workshops and courses tend to fill up quickly, often weeks in advance. While we make every effort to accommodate changes, we cannot guarantee transfers or makeup lessons for missed classes. If possible, we’ll fit you into an available session, but if not, you may need to consider booking another class or a private lesson.

Description

Skill Level: Beginner
What you will learn:
  • Measure yourself and identify your pattern size
  • Make simple fitting alterations
  • Lay out your pattern and cut fabric accurately
  • Transfer pattern markings
  • Pin and stitch together seams accurately
  • How and why to trim down seam allowances
  • Neaten and strengthen seams using overlocker
  • How to press seams for a professional-looking finish
  • How and why we use staystitching
  • Fuse interfacing to fabric
  • Attach drop shoulder sleeves
  • Make an elasticated waist channel
  • Batch sewing tasks together to save time and energy
  • Hem the dress and sleeves
  • Make a facing and attach it to your dress
  • Use trimming and clipping to help the neckline sit flat
  • How and why to understitch a facing
  • “Stitch in the ditch” to secure the facing to the inside of the dress

What to bring:

  • Fabric (Wash and Dry before class)
  • Thread to match
  • 20cm of iron on interfacing (similar weight to your fabric)
  • 1 meter of 10mm elastic
  • Sewing Kit if you have one

SIZE RANGE – UK 6-24 (US 2-20 / EUR 34-52)

FABRIC SUGGESTIONS – Light- to medium-weight drapey fabrics such as chambray, viscose (rayon), Tencel (lyocell), double gauze, brushed cotton or crêpe. The short sleeve version can also be made in less drapey fabrics such as linen, cotton lawn, and seersucker. More experienced? Try single knit drapey jersey, stretch velvet or light-weight French terry.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

Note: Try to find 150cm wide fabric as some of the sizes and variations won’t fit 115cm wide fabric.

150CM (60in) WIDE

Knee Length 2.5m

Midi Length 3m

115CM, (45in) WIDE (sizes 5-10 won’t fit on 115cm wide fabric)

Knee Length – Bracelet length sleeve 3m

Short sleeve 2.5m

*All sizes of the knee-length dress and sizes 1-6 of the midi-length dress will also fit on 140cm (56in) wide fabric. Sizes 7-8 of the midi-length dress will fit on 145cm (58in) wide fabric.

Provided:

  • Lotta Dress Pattern by Tilly & The Buttons
  • Sewing Machines
  • Pins, scissors and tools are provided if you have your own
  • Coffee and tea and yummy biscuits
  • Lessons are run in our cool studio in Elsternwick right near the train stations, free parking is available in the train station car park.
